„Die Klausen von Oberstdorf“

Photographer: Christian Popkes

Customs and traditions are an essential part of a cultural region. Especially in the alpine region are some age-old survived. The "Klausentreiben" in Oberstdorf, may be one of the oldest cultural traditions be pagan times. In dark winter nights, young men dress in Ivory robes, put animal or fur heads with antlers on their heads and roam with wild rattling chains through the streets to drive away evil spirits. This custom Christian Popkes immediately cast a spell. For this reason, he presented his unreal pictures of “Klausen”, in an equally unusual location during the first “Oberstdorfer Fotogipfel” : Directly on the peak of the 2224m “Nebelhorn” in Europe's highest outdoor installation.
