Innovation made in North Rhine-Westphalia

photokina, the world's leading trade fair for imaging, which begins today, has been the international showcase of the imaging industry since 1950. From 26 to 29 September 2018, global key players of the industry, as well as young company founders will arrive in Cologne to demonstrate the innovative capacity of the industry and its importance for nearly all other industrial branches. The business location of North Rhine-Westphalia is also represented by several very successful start-ups. The Minister for the Economy of North Rhine-Westphalia, Prof. Andreas Pinkwart, who has assumed the patronage for the IMAGING LAB by photokina, emphasised the ambition of the region to be perceived internationally as a motor for innovation in the context of a dinner with high-ranking representatives of the imaging industry on the evening prior to the start of photokina.

In the context of a delegation trip to Palo Alto in California, Minister for the Economy and Digital Affairs, Prof. Andreas Pinkwart recently made use of the opportunity to test the attractiveness of start-up concepts from North Rhine-Westphalia, and to draw the attention of investors to innovations from the region. He drew a positive balance: "Our innovations find high demand internationally. This encourages us to continue along the path to a new period of start-ups: with good basic conditions, simple and digital processes, non-bureaucratic scholarships and an abundant offering of venture capital. Projects like the Imaging Lab of photokina are an important element for directing even more attention to North Rhine-Westphalia as a motor of innovation."

This goal is also supported by Gerald Bose, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH: "With the Imaging Lab by photokina, we have created a format in which start-ups can present their ideas for the future to the development departments of the technology leaders and the research institutes. We are pleased if we can contribute towards further advancing the digital pioneer role of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with our events."

The success of the digital transformation is of central importance for the strongest economic region of the Federal Republic. For this reason, especially small and medium-sized companies forming the backbone of the economy of North Rhine-Westphalia should receive more support.

Events of Koelnmesse, like photokina or DIGILITY, which takes place in parallel, offer company representatives great opportunities for knowledge transfer and networking. Young, successful companies like Gearflix from Bochum or Mediafix from Cologne provide important impulses here. The two new exhibitors of photokina convince with business models that speak to the zeitgeist, and thus at the same time awaken the interest of both investors and customers. "Shifting the focus of the public increasingly to the importance of imaging, and thus demonstrating our innovative capability as an industry as a whole; these are the great opportunities offered by photokina 2018. Including with a view to being perceived by other industry branches as a potential and trend-setting partner", explains Rainer Führes, chairman of the German Photo Industry Association (PIV). The PIV is this year hosting its “Start-Up Day“ at photokina. The pitches of the ten finalists from Germany, Europe and the USA take place on 27 September on the stage of the Imaging Lab in hall 5.1.

You can find the programme of the Imaging Lab Stage, as well as all exhibitors of photokina in our event and exhibitor search.
